NC SiteSearch, an integrated statewide industrial property management system, was designed
and developed by the
North Carolina Department of Commerce,
Information Services Division, to support the collection and dissemination of information
on North Carolina industial buildings and sites.
In 1998, as part of an e-commerce analysis conducted by North Carolina's
Information Resources Management Commission (IRMC)
, business requirements for an integrated industrial sites and buildings system
were analyzed. Requirements identified during that initial investigation were
used as the basis of the development effort.
Many challenges were addressed during the design and development of this
system, including data entry over a wide geographic area, many types of diverse
users, and complex interfaces to existing site and building data systems within
the
North Carolina Partnerships for Economic Development.
The system was designed and developed in accordance
with North Carolina's statewide technical architecture guidelines. The resulting
implementation uses Microsoft's Visual Studio 6.0 to implement a true n-tier
application architecture. Distributed Component Object Model
(DCOM) objects were constructed, including separate logic modules to implement
business rules and data access functions. Active Server Pages (ASPs) are used
to present Web pages. These ASPs communicate with business objects which, in turn,
communicate with business objects and data access objects as required. The data
access objects communicate with a Microsoft SQL Server database, where industrial
property data, including images and maps, are stored.
